Halloween Spirit

Spencer’s – previously known as Spencer Gifts, is a lifestyle retail company with locations in malls throughout the United States and Canada. Spencer’s History – Spencer Gifts was founded in 1947 by Max Adler as a mail-order catalogue company which he operated out of his garage for many years. Spencer Gifts (as it was then known) sold an assortment of novelty merchandise no one needed, but everyone wanted, offering products for garment care and storage and household needs, bric-a-brac items and inexpensive gifts, costume jewelry as well as humor and seasonal holiday novelties, all which enabled Spencer Gifts to become a household name. Because of the popularity of his catalogue, Max outgrew his garage and moved his operations from his home in Easton, Pennsylvania to Atlantic City then to Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey where the company’s headquarters is located today. In 1963, the mail-order company expanded its business into the retail arena, opening its first store in the Cherry Hill Mall in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, where it still has a presence today. Shortly after branching out and launching its retail division, Spencer Gifts was acquired by MCA, an entertainment company in 1968. This was the first of several acquisitions which took place over the next two decades.
